Behind the Canvas
It’s all about the weather….. Long, hot summer days have suddenly disappeared like early morning dew.
A Series of Abstract Landscapes
A new year, 2026. A new series of landscapes.
Responses to walks through hills, fields and woods.
An abstract representation of the natural, lived environment in simple line and colour on a nutral field of white tones.
For meditation and contemplation.
Summer Work in Progress …. can I get through it all by Autumn?
I have been sorting through my canvas store rack and found a fair bit of unfinished work.
So the challenge is to finish all of them by the time leaves begin to fall. That is along with any current works!
These works are all at the same stage. There is the beginning of an idea but where each one goes we shall have to wait and see . . . . . somewhere in each a narrative will emerge.
New Studio, New Shore
Sailing at Dusk by the Needles, Isle of Wight,
Andrew Herridge, acrylic on stretched canvas, 80x30 cm.
2024 saw a move 500 miles south, a passage across the Solent and relocation to a tiny, ancient village by a different lighthouse. My studio is now set up, i have resumed painting surrounded by unspoilt secret shores and rolling countryside.
Unique Practice: Ocean’s Breath
I’ve been struck for some time by a thought, the elements that surround one when living on a tiny island, are in touch constantly.
Why shouldn’t wind and wave play a part in making an artwork. An exciting, direct, controlling part in my practice?
Make it stand out
Once the winds and sea have completed their image a slow natural drying process completes the first stage.
Further development of the image may be by my hand.
Alternatively, the work might be finished, needing little physical intervention on my part.
There i smore work to be done here . . . . .
On this December day, it is said ……
. . . . . Scotland may easily experience three or four seasons in a day. No truer than now. From a painting point of view, it couldn’t be better. There is little chance of being stuck for inspiration, especially as being by the shore and a painter of coastal inspired subjects.
Today we felt freezing temperatures, spring showers, autumn mists. That’s not to mention the drama of dusk cloud laden skies allowing peeks of intense sunlight to spotlight the Atlantic.
Three seasons in a day . . . . . . yes please.
All the Drama is in the Sky
Wide open drama . . . . .
All The Drama is In The Sky
The skies are epic, broad splashes of greys and white. My favourite must be when brilliant darts of white light escape the clutches of dark shies. The drama is indescribable, crescendo after crescendo stabbing the heavens.
Beneath, seas mirror the performance. Utterly stunning.
